The Ad Club of Toronto invites you to the 2008 Magazine Day - "Get your 'Mag' on, The Greatest Read on Earth!"
Many titles are celebrating milesone birthdays this year so we are throwing a party! Gary Garland will provide us with history of magazines in Canada discussing how over the years, in spite of all arguments to the contrary, magazines have survived and are stronger than ever. Kenneth Whyte of Maclean's will provide us with his insight on the future of magazines in Canada. Prepare to celebrate and be inspired! This stands to be a fabulous event and one not to be missed.
Gary Garland
Gary Garland joined Magazines Canada in 1997, bringing with him relevant advertising and business management experience.
Having completing his MBA at Dalhousie University, Gary started his career in marketing, gaining brand management experience at Pepsi-Cola, CIBC and Cadbury Schweppes. He spent the next 13 years advancing in senior account management and media management positions within Ogilvy & Mather, Initiative Media and MacLaren McCann. He has had the privilege of working on a wide variety of businesses including Unilever, Quaker Oats, Molson, General Motors, Novartis and LEGO.
Gary is Magazines Canada’s Executive Director of Advertising Services.
Kenneth Whyte
Kenneth Whyte has been publisher and editor-in-chief of Maclean's, Canada's only weekly newsmagazine, since March 2005.
Whyte began his career in journalism as a sports reporter at the Sherwood Park News, where he went on to serve as editor-in-chief of the paper. He joined Alberta Report as a reporter in the mid-1980s and later served as executive editor of the magazine.
In 1994, Whyte was appointed editor of Saturday Night, Canada's leading monthly magazine, featuring such authors as Mordecai Richler, Mark Kingwell, and Alice Munro. In 1998, he was named editor-in-chief of the newly launched national newspaper National Post. The paper grew from less than 100,000 circulation to over 300,000 in three years amid an expensive, hard-fought newspaper war with Toronto's Globe & Mail. In early 2003, after ownership of the Post had changed hands, Whyte left the paper as part of a purge of senior management. Whyte next became a visiting scholar in media and public policy at McGill University. Whyte is a member of the board of governors of the Donner Canadian Foundation, a senior fellow of Massey College at the University of Toronto, a trustee of the McGill Institute for the Study of Canada, and a co-founder of the McGill Observatory in Media and Public Policy.
Whyte joined "MacLean's" at the start of its 100th year of publication. He is the first person in the 103-year history of "Maclean's" to simultaneously hold the titles of editor and publisher. The magazine was named Canada's magazine of the year in 2006. Its newsstand sales have increased 80% during his tenure and its finances are believed to have stabilized.

what an eye-openerBy: Andrew Cherwenka At 11:43 p.m. on April 23, 2008
I know very little about the magazine industry. My only advertising exposure has been in the internet. It blew me away to see how the magazine industry is far more of a partner and less of a competitor to web than I ever thought. A great website drives magazine subscriptions, and a high subscription base drives web traffic and advertising revenue. I'm sure this is obvious to most people but I never saw it this way. Not so for newspapers, radio, and out-of-home. I thought this was a great event. |
